There is no doubt to make money online your product needs to be seen!
One of the best promotion efforts you can do (in My opinion created by my experiences)
Is to list your site on open directories! Dmoz being the first and the best because a lot of the top search engines search Dmoz to create their listing!
Go to http://dmoz.org/
from there surf to the best suitable category for your site then click suggest URL in the top right corner. Then follow the instructions.
According to Dmoz and from my experience I have no reason not to believe them, the following was copied from their site:
If your site has been accepted into the Open Directory, it may take anywhere from 2 weeks to several months for your site to be listed on partner sites which use the Open Directory data, such as AOL Search, DirectHit, HotBot, Google, Lycos, Netscape Search, etc. We make updates of the data available weekly, but each partner has their own update schedule.
There you have it you just listed your site with all the top search engines
It will take a few months before you see the results but the wait will be worth it.
When I started Siruis Freeware http://www.siruis-freeware.com over 5 years ago the first year I received maybe 10 hits a month if I was lucky! When I finally listed my site in the Dmoz directory after a few months the hits start pouring in! One month last year Siruis Freeware peeked at 1,200,000 hits! I haven't spent a lot of time promoting Siruis! Take note though, since then I changed my whole site to an <Iframe> the hits have decreased dramatically! That's a different story!
While promoting my new profit website http://www.INet-profit.com I ran across the following site! I haven't looked it over real good but from what I have seen it should help any newbie's understand the do's and don'ts of promotion. They also have many Promotion recourses and links.

The only thing I recommend you remember while you are promoting is if you list your site more than once with any directory or any search engine they will take you off the
list so be careful to keep track of where you promote!
You can promote your site after a period of time with most search engines again
but as long as you are listed in a open directory like Dmoz I don't recommend listing again.
FINAL NOTE: All the search engines started to charge to get listed but if you look hard you will find a free listing link on most of them! I also have noticed on search engines that charge money, the free listings are right up with the paid listings unless they are in a separate listing on the same page known as the Sponsored Web Results.
