Tips to Optimize Your Website for Inktomi in 2004!

The search engine area is changing fast and Inktomi is
becoming a more and more important factor. Yes, Google is
the most used search engine at this moment and will continue
to grow in 2004. But if you take a closer look to the
relevancy of the results, Google should be carefully to his
major competitor, Inktomi.

Webmasters are doing a big mistake right now. While they
optimize their pages for Google in a continue growing
competition, they also dream to score well for Inktomi. This
is totally wrong in 2004! Even sometime this works, it'll
become harder and harder to accomplish such a desire.

If you want to optimize for Inktomi, always keep in mind the
following rules:

-> Each page MUST be unique on it's own and the meta tags
should differ for each page.

-> Each of your pages MUST include relevant content.

The most important elements on Inktomi optimization are the
next: Title, Meta tags, URL's, Page elements.

*Title*

The title is the MOST important factor and should be a
maximum of 10 words or 50-70 characters. You need to make
your title clear and specific to what the page is about.
Avoid to stuff keywords in your title.

*Meta Description Tag*

The meta description tag must include 15-20 words and
should emphasize the keywords used in the title tag. Always
make your description concise and specific to the content
of the page.

*Keywords Tag*

Always use QUALITY keywords in your list. You have to begin
you keywords tag with the primary keywords and DO NOT use
punctuation in the keywords tag. Also remember to use commas
in the keywords tag. Most important, avoid using the same
keywords tag for every page of your website.

*URL and Page Names*

Inktomi likes websites which uses a primary target keyword
in url or domain name. He also put more value in websites
with a clear, easy-to-follow and meaningful navigation
structure.

*Page Elements*

Place your target KEYWORDS at the top of the page. Use BOLD
keywords since Inktomi places more importance on words that
are bolded. Inktomi also prefers LONGER KEYPHRASES rather
then short terms. HEADINGS are important as well, and should
be used to separate different sections on a page.

LINK TEXT are one of the most important on page elements. Do
not use keywords in more than 50% of the links text size.
Try to always link to other internal pages using your target
keyphrases.

*What to Avoid*

- Do not use image or javascript navigation to link together
pages of the site.

- Affiliate links, CSS and dynamic URL's present a problem
for robots (SLURP), because they might not be able to follow
them and penalize the page for such use.
