Have you ever considered what it means to believe?
The word believe is a verb, an action word.
Believing is something that you do. It is a choice.
Throughout the ages, great men and women have known that
what you choose to believe can greatly influence what
you can accomplish.
They can conquer who believe they can.
--Virgil (70BC-19BC)
In the province of the mind, what one believes to be true
either is true or becomes true.
--John Lilly (1915-2001)
Even though we think about many things, with our conscious
minds throughout the day, believing occurs on a much deeper
level.
The innermost part of our minds, where believing takes
place, is known as the heart.
When a child is young, and is told don't touch, the stove
is hot, he might decide to test for himself what it means
to be hot, and if indeed what he has been told is true.
Because of the strong physical evidence, in this case, pain
from the hot stove, it doesn't take long for the child to
take it to heart that the stove really is hot.
The statement is proven to be true, and is believed,
remembered, and becomes a part of the core set of values,
or truths, upon which the child can safely rely.
Likewise, if that same child is told, repeatedly that
she is either good or bad, she will do her best to
live up to those expectations.
By the time a person reaches his teen years, much of his
belief system has already been established.
And although those established habits and thinking patterns
are sometimes very difficult to change, it can be done.
One of the things that may occur to you from time to time,
is that the people with whom you come in contact, are not
always in a the best of moods. Building you up and telling
you what a tremendous job you are doing, may not be the
highest priority in their lives.
Because of the nature of the world in which we live, often
times we may find ourselves doubting our worthiness and our
ability to reach our goals.
But we do have the ability to change our thoughts, and
consequently the things that we believe about ourselves.
If anyone is to tell us what a great person we are, and
that we can, in fact, reach our goals, that person may
just be the person that we see in the mirror.
With repetition and reinforcement, we can re-train the
inner part of our mind, our heart, to believe that
which we need to believe, so that we can go where we
need and want to go.
Begin today, by telling yourself that you ARE the person
that you need to be. You are GOOD enough. You are SMART
enough. You are CAPABLE of reaching your goals.
Write it down. Make a list of the positive attributes
that you would like to believe about yourself. Then, read
the list every day. In fact, read it several times each day.
Start doing this, and you will be surprised at the results
that you receive.
To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also
dream; not only plan, but also believe.
--Anatole France
The choice is yours. Plan today to change your believing,
and tomorrow, you will accomplish great things. Who knows?
You may even go far beyond your dreams.
