As a former full-time wildlife tracker, I see the net in a different way than most people. In the wild, all animals leave traces of their movements everywhere they go.
Learning to identify and capitalize on those signs, I became a pretty darn good tracker and the world of the wild opened up before my eyes like no power hiker could ever know.
As a tracking instructor, I taught people to slow down, look around, get off the trail, and think like a Mountain Lion, or Black Bear in order to find the signs.
Today, I want to teach YOU to slow down, get off the info highway, and just watch for the signs of success. In the wild, Black Bears leave signs for possible mates.
They pick trees at major wildlife trail intersections to scratch deep marks into with their claws, and rub their back sides on the bark to leave scent for marking their territory. (Plus it feels darn good!)
What in the world does this have to do with you and marketing on the web? A lot actually. Just as bears leave signs in the wild in order to be found and heard, we leave signs on the net to do the same thing.
We aren't trying to attract mates necessarily, but we ARE trying to attract customers! The places we leave our signs (links) will benefit us by getting more people to track us to our den
(website)!
Do you think bears just have ONE tree to mark their territory and leave scent postcards for other bears? Hell no! They find the best places to leave their signs and they ALWAYS look for more and more places everyday.
Eventually they have a territory mapped off - the area they dominate in the wild.
Like a black bear, I have established my territory on the web. While I haven't had to pee on anything (bad for electronics!) I DO have thousands of links, tons of articles and reviews, forum posts, newsletters, blogs, websites, and many other places that I have carved out territory online.
Did this happen overnight? Not at all my friend. Was it easy to do? Not unless you get a kick out of repetitive, long long hours and months of working on leaving your sign all over the web. It's work!
But you know what? It's the only thing online that works to promote your site for the long haul: constantly leaving sign everywhere your best customers surf to let them know you exist.
Why is this even better and more efficient than the signs bears leave in the wild? Links are residual. 99% of the time they STAY where you leave them. Scent wears off in the wild and has to be re-applied constantly!
So take heart. Power Linking and all the many facets of your marketing campaign really do work. You are building a critical mass of signs to your web site everyday that you promote it.
Once your territory on the web is mapped out and clearly defined, your whole life changes for the better as long as your products are solid and your sales message at your den is compelling!
Don't stop and don't get discouraged. There is plenty of sign on the web that proves that you too can track success to it's den and capture it for your own!
